Fascinating look at what it's like working as a climbing extra / double in the film world. However, this isn't the point of this book. It is a gentle look at British climbing from the 50s to the present from someone who has "done it all". The author hasn't a bad word to say about anyone - although there are some pithy vignettes where it is possible to read between the lines. A very enjoyable read, especially for "climbers of a certain age", but also for the non climber curious about a world that has vanished among cell phones, middle east turmoil and the immediacy of information. The book is rounded off with some great pictures. Well worth reading.Product details

Great read of a top chap
Cracking good read! Mr Boysen provides a great history of classic 50's through 70's British climbing. His writing really takes the reader back in time. Mr Boysen's remarkable experiences are a joy to read - one feels as if they are experiencing them for themselves! For those who are interested in the 'Bonington Experience' there are anecdotes a-plenty. I definately recommend it for anyone interested in climbing history, especially British climbing history. Thank you Mr. Boysen.
Martin Boysen's autobiography substantiates a widely held belief that rock climbers remember vividly every nuance of every move of every climb they have done. More surprisingly, he seems to have total recall of hundreds of incidents and characters that make up this Golden Age of British climbing. We see Martin expand his horizons from his local crags to Wales and the Alps, and eventually to Patagonia and the Himalaya, a key member of several Best of British high profile expeditions. He describes the motivation, the rivalries, the good and bad luck that are part and parcel of this sport, or rather this lifestyle, for the narrative spans a good 55 years. An articulate writer, with a dry sense of humour, Boysen's enthusiasm for exploration and the relationships born at the crag or in the mountains make this a great read. Hanging On is not only a detailed historical account, but offers insight for young climbers trying to balance ambition, determination and risk. For their friends and families trying to understand this consuming passion, it will be a book to hang on to, for as Martin's story shows, they may be in it for the long haul.
